This piece is a startling example of finding something where at first I thought there was nothing. This recording was so noisy, happening in the midst of a cloudburst thunderstorm, all our bags and equipment got soaked but everything still seemed to work.
Amazingly, beneath the rain was a strange whine of a bug. I should be able to identify this species for you but as of yet I still have no idea what it is. Of course, I know you’ll remind me, “hearing is forgetting the name of the thing one hears,” and that’s why I managed to turn this into a mystery of music. The crackling of water and weed was sonified into bass and drums, and then Ilgin explored the idea of some gargantuan monster howling undersea.
"Mendebur is difficult to translate… here are some usages: drunken, swindler, smashing, disgusting, slovenly, bastard, son of a bitch… Comes from Arabic, and also means ‘the one that comes from the West’ ---but in Arabic culture, West means ‘from behind’ ---so, mendebur also means ‘the one who betrays’ –comes sneakily from behind and hurts."
